The plot stands for Newt, but the release date still hasn’t been announced, leading most to believe Newt has been cancelled, insiders supposedly saying:
“We have taken Newt off of our development schedule to allow our creative teams to focus on these upcoming projects.” and John Lasseter (Disney/Pixar animation head) declined to comment.

I believe that was one of the reasons why they have seemingly trashed the process and at the very least put it on a firm halt until they can redo the plot enough to make it original enough to sell tickets.
